The phenomenal discoveries of Pierre Curie played a major role in today’s technology. His findings with Crystallography has allowed many scientific invents to take place like finding the structure of DNA and the structure of proteins. He and his wife’s discovery of Radium and other radioactive substances has helped doctors note the incredible radioactive rays from the low energy ones from the high energy rays. These differences have also helped skin treatments because specific radio activities can actually help instead of hurting the skin. In short Pierre Curie’s work has drastically improved today’s scientific successes.
Pierre Curie born in 1859 in France was an amazing physicist who was also promising in other areas like chemistry. Curie was born into a family of scholars with his grandfather and his father both being physicians. In his later years he married Marie Sklodowska and she became Madame Curie. They worked together to discover new radioactive elements that will have made large contributions to new advancements on both Physics and chemistry.All of his hard work payed of and he as well as his wife and other colleagues won nobel prizes as a result of their findings. Pierre at a relatively young age with the help of his brother Jacques had studied the electric properties of crystals(Mould 12). They had come to the conclusion that electric polarization in a substance or particular crystals resulting from the application of mechanical stress was called piezoelectricity. (Marie and Pierre Curie, Pioneering Couple 44). Pierre Curie had also studied Crystallography which deals with the arrangement and bonding of atoms in the crystalline solids and the specific structure of a crystal lattice (Crystallography 34). Before modern technology crystallography was used determine substances, in today’s society scientists are able to see the structure and arrangements of very important molecules like proteins and DNA (Crystallography 34).
While married to Marie Curie they had worked with a number of colleagues and discovered a few new incredibly radioactive substances (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 13). Henri Becquerel a colleague of Pierre Curie had discovered Uranium in the year 1898 and from that the Curies and their colleagues had discovered that Uranium emits relatively weak rays and it makes the air electrically conductive (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 13). Pierre and Madame Curie discovered Thorium and it’s compounds are really similar to those of Uranium. They also discovered that substances containing Thorium or Uranium were strong enough to emit decent amount of Becquerel rays. Radioactivity was initially said to be an atomic characteristic of Uranium and Thorium.(Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14).
Madame Curie continued to study the minerals said to contain Thorium and Uranium and they came to the conclusion that those minerals being studied were indeed radioactive (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14). With their continuous studies of these minerals they found yet another element and the named it Polonium, this one is incredibly similar to Bismuth (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14). They found yet another element which was also radioactive and named it Radium, they found that it that it belonged to the Rare Earth Group (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14). Although these elements were found in small trace amounts, they all had very high radioactivity, approximately two million times larger than Uranium (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14).
The Curies were able to extract Radium from radiferous barium salt. Compared to Barium, Radium is larger and more powerful (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14). Radium proved to be the most powerful and harmful out of the other substances. The raysemitted from Radium are very intense and can cause physical and internal harm to ones body (Radioactive Substances Especially Radium 14). Pierre Curie had voluntarily exposed himself to the radium for about several house and it created a lesion that developed over time and took awhile to heal (Mould 10). The discovery of of radium helped some scientists with the use of x-rays on people,they found out that the low energy rays were more beneficial and could help cause cancer.(Linton 7-8)
Pierre-Curie lived through the Franco-Prussian War that lasted for about a year. Napolean III had been intimidated by the Prussians who had won the Austro-Prussian war in the year 1866 when he was just a boy. This war was incredibly detrimental to every French citizen because of the small chance that the French had at actually being the victors of this war. During this war both German and Prussian declared war on France. Compared to the Germans and Prussians the French seemed incredibly minuscule. The French had about 200,000 troops to fight the war while the Germans and Prussians had 400,000 troops. This war was more detrimental to the French because of the amount of casualties because they were greatly outnumbered. In May 1871 the treaty of Frankfurt had been signed which forced the French into joining the German empire and forced the French to pay five billion Francs as reparations.

Pierre Curie was born into a family of intelligent individuals, his family has had a past history with science being the grandson and son of physicians. Curie’s family history influenced him to conduct experiments as a young boy. In his later years he was able to work with many individuals that helped he and his wife with these magnificent findings that are still being used today.
